“Evergreen”
Once I lay me down in pasture green,
The nearby brook whose waters sing,
Contained minnows, most unseen.
Hid among the rocks they played,
Iridescent with the day.
And on the banks, wild lilies grew,
Mid trees. And leaves that fluttered and blew.
The breeze was soft upon my face,
I loved, I loved, this sacred place.
At a distance cattle graze,
And calves cavort
In abandoned craze.
Blue skies, white clouds overhead
I lay upon my fragment bed.
Memories came of loved ones known,
They’ve fled beyond this mortal zone.
We sat at a table round and dined
The cards, the food, and oh, the wine
Laughter, life — a time divine
I feel their presence every day
Within my heart, their memories stay —
Now years have passed — and I am old,
Careful now, no longer bold.
I see your faces when I dream —
Always loved,
And evergreen.
