Yield - 15 to 18 scones

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoons salt
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ cup shortening
  • 4 ounces (½ stick) cold butter
  • ¾ cup raisins
  • 2 eggs
  • 2/3 cup milk
a plate of raisin scones

Directions

Sift the dry ingredients together and set aside. Stir the eggs into the milk to blend well. Cut the shortening and the butter into the dry ingredients until it is the texture of course meal. Add the raisins. Stir in the liquid. Do not over-mix; stir only until moistened (it’ll be a shaggy dough).

Using a small cookie scoop, drop mounds of batter onto a parchment lined baking sheet (or an ungreased baking sheet). Bake at 400 degrees until lightly browned and set. Remove from baking sheet to cool. Brush with extra melted butter.
