Ingredients

5 large eggs, separated 1/2 cup butter, softened 1/2 cup shortening 2 cups sugar 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa 1 tsp. baking soda 1 cup buttermilk 1 cup sweetened, flaked coconut 2/3 cup finely chopped pecans 2 tsp. vanilla extract Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting (recipe below) Pecan halves for garnish

Instructions

Beat egg whites at high speed with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form. Set aside. Beat butter and shortening until creamy; gradually add sugar, beating well. Add egg yolks, 1 at a time, beating after each addition until blended. Combine flour, cocoa and baking soda. Add to butter mixture, alternating with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Beat at low speed after each addi
